'Counter-Terror' Policy Targets Uyghurs

2011-04-07
A new report says China uses the threat of terrorism to crack down on Uyghurs in Xinjiang.

AFP
Uyghur men and women chat outside a mosque in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

China's anti-terrorism policy deliberately targets ethnic minority communities such as Uyghurs and Tibetans struggling for greater autonomy, according to a white paper by a rights group.

The policy equates terrorism with groups pushing for more self-governing rights, is too broad in scope, and shirks international human rights commitments, said the Hong Kong and New York-based Human Rights in China (HRIC).

The paper looked into human rights concerns within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a regional intergovernmental organization which includes China and five other member states-Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan-with a total population of 1.5 billion people.

It said the SCO approach to counter-terrorism, modeled on China'sThree Evils doctrine, and highlighting principles of territorial integrity, noninterference in internal affairs, and social stability, contributes to supporting repressive regimes at the expense of human rights.

A failure to demand accountability from the SCO undermines the effectiveness and integrity of the international system in countering terrorism and advancing rule of law, peace, and security, HRIC said.

"China's approach to counter-terrorism is the Three Evils doctrine, and it links terrorism with separatism and extremism," HRIC director Sharon Hom said in an interview.

"This Three Evils approach is overbroad, highly politicized, and while not exclusively applied only to ethnic minority groups, it is regularly applied to Uyghurs and Tibetans in its practice."

Hom said other SCO member states follow China's lead by recognizing Xinjiang and Tibet as inalienable territories of China and repatriating its ethnic minorities who seek asylum within their borders.

"China has enormous clout in the SCO, and you can also see it in the ways in which the other SCO member states and the SCO will completely parrot China's line and China's policy on these two so-called autonomous regions."

Treatment of Uyghurs

The HRIC white paper said it found "serious issues" concerning China's treatment of Uyghurs, including the principle of non-refoulement and potential use of torture during interrogations.

Regulations specific to Xinjiang became part of China's domestic counter-terrorism legal framework in December 2009 when provincial-level lawmakers revised the region's Comprehensive Management of Social Order.

Through the revisions, Chinese authorities were ordered to specifically crack down on the three threats of "terrorism, separatism, and extremism" in the aftermath of the July 2009 ethnic violence in Urumqi which left hundreds dead, according to official media reports.

HRIC called the amendments "unique" to Xinjiang, adding that "such singular focus by the Chinese government ... suggests that the concept of terrorism has been applied in a biased fashion, with the Uyghur community the subject of intense scrutiny and suspicion."

It noted that while China does face real threats of terrorism, "the limited involvement of Uyghurs in terrorist acts cannot serve as justification of widespread repression throughout [Xinjiang] or the labeling of peaceful Uyghur activists under the rubric of the Three Evils."

Adherence to rules

But despite its reliance on the Three Evils doctrine, HRIC wrote, China continues to claim that it is acting to "firmly uphold and fulfill the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council," according to a statement by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security (MPS).

Under U.N. rules, China pledged to oppose the "arbitrary widening" of the scope of fighting terrorism and identifying terrorism with any specific ethnic group or religion.

"The Three Evils doctrine undermines this principled approach and, in doing so, compromises human rights guaranteed under international law, and international counter-terrorism efforts as a whole," HRIC said.

HRIC recommended that Beijing narrow its "Three Evils"-based approach to national security and reformulate its definition of terrorism.

On June 24 last year, Chinese authorities announced they had broken up a "terrorist" ring of a Uyghur separatist group, the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), after arresting more than ten of its members involved in an alleged major plot against China.

The announcement said that information leading to the arrest had been obtained through the investigation of 20 "individuals of Chinese citizenship" who had been deported to China on December 20, 2009-the exact date that Cambodia deported 20 Uyghurs seeking asylum following the July 5 ethnic unrest in Urumqi.

The statement also indicated that several of the alleged ETIM members had confessed to participating in a wide array of terrorist activities during interrogation.

Human Rights Watch said in February that the Cambodian government has a "dismal track record" of deporting refugees granted asylum status by the UNHCR, particularly those from neighboring countries such as China and Vietnam.

Ethnic tensions

Millions of Uyghurs-a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim-populate Central Asia and the Xinjiang region.

Ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and majority Han Chinese settlers have simmered for years, and erupted in riots in July 2009 that left some 200 people dead, according to the Chinese government's tally.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining links to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

Roofing Vancouver Issues

Roofing Vancouver

In Vancouver special care is needed when getting a estimate for a home. The roofing contractor in Vancouver must know precisely what they're coping with whenever getting your roof away. Unexpected costs really are a common situation within Vancouver and each proprietor should be ready

Heritage- becoming among the earliest areas in the GVRD you are able to realize that there are several fairly aged homes. With a steep pitch roof, most likely in the vicinity of 12/12 message that essentially indicates 45 diploma angle roof. The initial roofing had been cedar tremble looking at taping. I'm not sure if it was being laid back or even the norm, in the event that everyone was trying to cut costs but when you have this roof you most likely obtained more than one layer on the top. The original continues to be on and 2 additional levels sit down above the actual cedar tremble. I've come across home exactly where 5 layers sitting on top of the house. According to building code nowadays a Vancouver Roofing company should eliminate all levels if a new roofing is to be positioned over. You people tend to pay much more because of the steepness, the couple of levels of roof, the plyboard outdoor patio and the trouble. You may be two ft from your neighbors

Roofing Vancouver

Low Slope -- Vancouver special houses run throughout East Vancouver. The minor problem with these types of homes in regards to roof covering is that dwindling roofing businesses available perform tar and tiny rocks. The choice you've is torch upon or metal. Asphalt shingles can't go on these types of houses. Your message is to reduced as well as asphalt most likely wouldn't last 10 years. Vancouver Roofing companies that have been in the commercial associated with flashlight on for more than 10 years are probably reliable. Snow and ice develop on these rooftops trigger mini swimming pools to build up in your roof and trigger major seeping, always keep the actual rain gutters as well as downpipes clear.

roofing vancouver by consumerschoiceroofing

Low Slope or even High Slope cedar shake -- Within Vancouver this is common about the Western side. There is not a lot to say about Cedar in Vancouver. There is an extended time period through the 60's, 70's as well as Eighties when Vancouver Roofing businesses were not installing cedar. Most Cedar roofs tend to be new building. cedar is the 1 creation that the majority of problems can be determined prior to the work starts

Reduced Downward slope or even High Downward slope Asphalt roofing - For those who have asphalt roofing also it was not transformed within the last ten years then you've a good deck. Because the 70's asphalt came into the marketplace. With new building shiplap or even also known as language as well as dance had been the only real option of the solid deck. Shiplap moves a great deal in the winter and in summer time therefore plyboard ought to be layered down through the roofing contractor

Roof covering in Burnaby

Roofing within Burnaby can have its challenges and also the best way to undergo all of them is to function from North to South starting at the very top associated with Burnaby. Within North Burnaby the hills begin to incline and decline to some pretty strong angles. The big problems I find listed here are front yard steepness and use of the home, although this might not appear to be a issue to you it's a truly big issue for any roofing company who has to hand carry your aged roofing upward the hill and hands carry your brand-new roofing lower the hill.

The hard, the downward slope area in this region stored creating companies aside and for that reason you've homes that were just about all built by individually employed building businesses. There are several portions associated with North Burnaby which have little groups houses all built together however as far as that Main Burnaby has. North Burnaby offers much more interesting built designs and roofs creating a golf ball park determine estimation in this region pretty hard.

Roofing Burnaby

Main Burnaby is where big building businesses having a standard new method of creating the house had been pretty hectic during the 70`s as well as earlier 80`s. With a shiplap outdoor patio becoming the only real choice as well as asphalt tiles becoming the option as well as positioned on a house. These days shiplap is the roofing contractors adversary due to the fact that the shingles nowadays are not designed to work with shiplap. Trying to convince main Burnaby they have to re-deck the rooftop along with plywood offers frequently already been ignored and for good reason.

The caliber of shiplap is high in this region with most of it that I have come across being in between 6 as well as 8 in . that is ideal. Other than that this particular part of Burnaby is pretty easy to roofing in with entry not being an issue all that often and a obvious style in sloped roofing that is clear to see. Lots of Vancouver specials focused here in order to along with torch on being the number one choice from the original tar residue as well as tiny rocks choice. Cedar roofs often spread the actual eastern aspect of this area with many converting to asphalt

Southern Burnaby has a tendency to have bigger rooftops which are sprinkled with asphalt as well as cedar shake. Cedar tremble rooftops in this area are usually through houses close to Two decades old. This home has a tendency to transform right into a asphalt roofing and most possess alright entry but some do not and also the rooftops are not all that in order to high. Some asphalt rooftops lower here actually have plyboard patio's that is usually a large saver for just about any property owner

Roofing West Vancouver

West Vancouver is a area associated with valley's and ridges, high driveways as well as hidden rooftops. This can be a roofing contractors nightmare however you will find roofing companies who work in the region as well as understand what these people probably could be coping with. In contrast to additional cities within the City Vancouver area, large construction businesses did not buy big monitors of property and build designed suburban cul-de-sacs. They are doing can be found however to a much smaller diploma than additional metropolitan areas. As a result you can find in a single road 20 houses all constructed in a different way. I suppose due to the land scenery it was the only way to get homes built in some regions.

There was certainly the boom during the 1970's through the shear number of shiplap patio's out there. Most roofs in West Vancouver that require a replacement are asphalt roofs which take a seat on a shiplap outdoor patio. They shingle is normally the lock shingle which was made for shiplap however no more available in the higher Vancouver area. The majority of property owners within West Vancouver are understanding they now require a plyboard outdoor patio to pay for the actual shiplap.

Cedar Roof (Pool Side) by FollowtheGrain

A few Cedar rooftops exist in West Vancouver but not much that needs changing. The majority of 20 years old cedar shake roofs in West Vancouver have been changed which means you find a cedar roofing here and there. Replacing cedar with cedar is not a all in order to typical practise and many Cedar rooftops are in brand new building.

Roofing West Vancouver

Vancouver specials are not all to common within West Vancouver. Flashlight upon and tar residue as well as gravel is available although not suggested. The rain as well as wind is commonly a little more extreme within West Vancouver, with the large quantities of trees and the chance of a heavy snowfall drop metal is really a high suggestion.

Obtaining a roofing estimation within West Vancouver can be very diverse from the person living right on the doorstep. if you have the steep front yard, have a roof that's higher than Thirty degrees and over 2000 square feet than you can spend more than $ 3000 than your neighbor. The type of roof as well as amount of pulsating can produce a huge difference. In West Vancouver it is very hard to golf ball park a price with this really reason. I suppose you could say in line with the small property you reside on and the style of the roof could make a big difference between a high estimate and a low estimation. Roof access has become a problem with a few roofing contractors having to hands have that old roofing more than hundred ft compared to hand carrying the new roof a hundred feet to the house.

Get 3 estimations to check apples along with celery but for the exact same product, provides you with a chance to become knowledgeable and get the right concerns. The majority of rooftops in West Vancouver is actually under ventilated therefore make sure when you get your roof estimate you can see if each and every estimation you get may change your ventilation or your brand-new roof won't last. The extra ventilation is not a add-on price so the more the actual merrier, you cannot have a limit on ventilation. Sapling debris is a problem therefore keep your roof with no damage the rooftop item. drip motorized inflator is probably the greatest type of upkeep.

The home are usually built with exactly the same style and also have the same ventilation problems so when it's time to replace your neighbours then its time for you to substitute your own..

Huber & Associated by www.jmonit.com

Brand new building roofing Victoria two decades ago included about a twenty 12 months guarantee. The majority of rooftops start to leak soon after the actual twenty 12 months mark and suddenly the whole street is getting their roofs replaced. When A Victoria roofing estimator involves your house and you're simply upon good conditions together with your neighbors maybe you might convince your own neighbours to get a roof estimation as well. The majority of Victoria roofing companies can offer 2 estimates. One is the actual estimate if perhaps you had been to change you home on it's own in the street. Another estimate is for you and also the actual neighbors that have chosen a estimation too, for those who have convinced your own neighbors to do so.

Victoria roofing companies can help to save money in two major places whenever multiple roof covering. Find the Best Victoria Roofing Contractor

My home is Victoria as well as understand how hard it's to find a good contractor to operate in your house. All of them appear real first plus they all promise you the world. Regrettably there are a few that actually deliver on these guarantees.

Roofing companies are no exclusion and need to complete your own research to be able to discount the good ones in the poor ones.

The rooftop is an important element of any house. This is your main hurdle of many from the components found outside. For those who have the leaking roofing you could discover your self putting lots of pans and pots throughout your house to catch water. In case your roofing gets truly poor you also danger this caving within at one point.

Fortunately if a roofing is constructed the right way it'll last for several decades. There are even some rooftops which are each so great they are able to are half a century.

Finding a dependable roof covering company within Victoria and also you need this kind of function done is actually of the utmost importance. You would like someone who's likely to give you a reasonable bet, do the job on time, and employ regular or above typical supplies.

This is actually the objective you just have to fine the roof for an region who's ready to do it.

Roofing And Roofing Contractor In RICHMOND, VA by roofinghub

Here are a few things that I personally would look for and can apply for not only Victoria, however all areas in the united kingdom:

When i first prefer to begin with recommendations. I know I'm not the only one who has a home and that i wish to ask other people their own opinion however had roof covering function done prior to me personally. Buddies, members of the family, colleagues, associates, and folks you realize will usually not drive a person incorrect. They are able to use a immediate you to an individual who has done a fantastic job for them. Unless an individual does not like a person they were usually not suggest a roofing company within Victoria that has carried out shoddy function.

Subsequent, you want to reach least three estimates. Roofing work is costly naturally and also you want a service provider who is going to provide you with a reasonable and reasonable price. Bear in mind a fair and sensible quote will be higher. Understand as well that roof covering companies pay some of the highest insurance rates out of any business within the country. Since the function done roofing companies workers comp rates tend to be regarding five times higher than additional such as Contractors. It's not out of the ordinary for this type of organization to pay $30 in workers compensation premiums for every hundred bucks they pay out in pay-roll. These expenses have to be forwarded to the consumer. So, when you get an offer from a roofing company understand that at least 30 to 40% of what he is getting you is just to pay for administrative as well as insurance costs. An individual who sends in for you and very reduced bid is probably without insurance weren't covered at all.

Everything should be written about the contract. Including the materials for use in your house and also the time that it will take to install all of them. Do not leave anything like a spoken agreement. You have to be in a position to precisely assess that which you were getting for that price you're having to pay making an educated decision. Once the estimators come they will attempt to bait you into putting your signature on something immediately. Avoid them. You need three estimates, alongside in your table, and also you have to take the time to see them every carefully such as the small print.

Finally, check up on a Victoria's roofing companies encounter and reputation. You want them to have sufficient experience in order to get the job done. Brilliantly, you want a company that has been around the block and absolutely nothing may surprise all of them. Should they have been around not less than five years they will have the trustworthiness of possibly doing great function are being people. The best people to ask the nearby companies. Even when it is their rival a company owner were usually not talk bad regarding an additional company unless he or she truly feels he is doing treatment terrible work. You should consider asking roofing providers that they think is the best. These people work with 100s the roofer's every month and therefore are inside a great position to provide you with within information.

Fundamental essentials 3 products I'd look for when choosing my personal roofer. I am picky about the people I choose to work along with and you ought to end up being picky as well. You can't depend on the Contractors yellow web page advert to inform you what they're about. Every company states of their the very best. Roofing companies are no exception and sometimes go with what are the largest phone book advert of the biggest crooks.

Research your options and you ought to be able to find a good Victoria roofing company. Take your time and don't let anyone rush a person. Opt for your own stomach and don't spend your hard earned money along with anyone you are feeling unpleasant along with

The right roofer Victoria is appropriate at the doorway action should you choose your research and thoroughly check the company's history and status. Doing this will make sure you don't get sold on something you don't need or even doing business with a disadvantage artist.

Please get more information at more info regarding Victoria roofing contractors.

Old car tires are a tremendous source of waste material today. Euroshield took this into account with the design of their rubber tiles, which prolong the tires’ lifecycle. The company is careful not to use the word “green” as a selling point or catch phrase — instead they call attention to the product’s high quality and durability. They’re quite right to do so — environmental design should be expected to be a part of every product on the market – not just a catchword.

To produce the shingles made from used vehicle tires, Euroshiled removes the tire wall and cuts the tread section into large pieces. Once the treading is buffed off, the rubber surface is coated with sawdust or slate dust. To create the shingle-like texture the pieces are heated and moulded into shape. A plastic tab on each shingle panel makes it easy to attach the pieces to the roof. The panels are 3 feet wide and fit into each other as they are laid across the roof. For an average-sized home, between 600-1000 rubber tires are used to create a rubber shingle roof.

The tiles come in three different shapes and styles — one can choose between a replica of chiselled slate, concrete-looking tiles or a raw wood look. The benefits are of course that the rubber tiles never will crack, rot or warp. The shingles still have the steel belting from the tire, which makes them strong and resistant to weather as well as natural wear and tear.

The tiles aren’t the cheapest choice of roofing material on the market, but the company has spent more than ten years developing the product and they offer a 50-year guarantee. Not only are the rubber tiles manufactured in an environmentally friendly way; they are also so durable you may never have to change your roofing material again. And if you do, they are recyclable again and again.

Rainwater harvest study finds roofing material affects water quality

For the past few years, one of the most common questions facing the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) hasn't been over contentious water rights or proposed water projects; it's been from homeowners wanting to know what type of roofing material is most suitable for collecting rainwater for indoor domestic use.

"Rainwater harvesting is becoming fairly widespread, at least in Central Texas. There's interest born out of necessity because people are simply running out of water in rural areas or they're interested in conserving water supplies and it's good for the environment," said Dr. Sanjeev Kalaswad, the TWDB's rainwater harvesting coordinator.

But when it came to responding to residents' questions about which roof collection surfaces are best suited for rainwater harvesting, TWDB didn't have a good, science-based answer to give, Kalaswad said. That's when the Cockrell School of Engineering came in to help.

With funding from TWDB, Cockrell School faculty and students conducted an in-depth study - recently published in the academic journal Water Research - examining the effects of conventional and alternative roofing materials on the quality of harvested rainwater. The study, led by civil, architectural and environmental engineering Assistant Professor Mary Jo Kirisits, showed that, of the five roofing materials tested, metal (specifically Galvalume), concrete tile and cool roofs produce the highest harvested rainwater quality for indoor domestic use. The study also showed that rainwater from asphalt fiberglass shingle roofs and increasingly popular "green" roofs contain high levels of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Although other potential pollutants can be significantly lower on green roofs (turbidity and aluminum), the high DOCs are significant where these roofs would be used for potable rainwater collection.

Water with DOC is not necessarily dangerous on its own, but Kirisits said when it's mixed with chlorine a common product used to disinfect water the two substances react to form byproducts that potentially cause cancer and other negative human health effects.

"Someone who already has a rainwater system is probably not going to change their roofing material based on this study, but this information is useful for anyone who's trying to make an informed decision about what material to use," Kirisits said.

Over the course of a year, Kirisits, her co-Principal Investigators Professor Kerry Kinney and Research Associate Professor Michael Barrett and their engineering students examined water collected from five roofing materials: asphalt fiberglass shingle, Galvalume, concrete tile, cool and green roofs.

The test sites included both pilot-scale and full-scale residential roofs one of which was the roof on the home of Kirisits and her husband. The other roofs were located at or near the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, where her team had the expertise of the center's director of research and consulting, Dr. Mark Simmons, who helped them interpret some of their findings.

"We had a phenomenal graduate and undergraduate student team. I think the research topic captured their imagination because it's tangible; it's something they could do in their own home. They can talk to their parents about it and they get it," Kirisits said. "Our generation of students is sustainable and green-minded, so it was a great project for them to be involved in and lead."

Rainwater harvesting has been practiced in some form or another for centuries, but its popularity declined in the United States after the advent of large centralized water supply systems that provide cheap, reliable and abundant water.

The practice has experienced a rebirth in the United States in recent years, however, thanks largely to growing environmental concerns and dwindling water supplies in parts of the country.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency doesn't regulate the quality of residential rainwater collected through harvesting, but some local agencies and states, like Texas and Hawaii which are among the most proactive offer voluntary water quality guidelines.

While some roofing materials performed better than others in the study, Kirisits said rainwater harvested from each of the roofs would still have to be treated if the consumer wanted to meet EPA's drinking water standards or reuse guidelines.

personal finance money management

A few years ago, the Internet experienced a video revolution. As broadband access expanded and more people began uploading content, video became an expected resource for consumers. Businesses could get more mileage out of television commercials and engage users by linking to video reviews of its products.

A year ago, we saw evidence of small and medium-sized business increasing budgets for video content – to be used both on their homepages and in advertisements. In 2009, 19% of businesses polled were using video (up from 5% in 2008) and I’m willing to bet that number will be much higher in the 2010 report that should come out later this month.

Now, as technology has become more affordable and increasingly mobile, we’re able to experience virtually anything online. As such, local search engines are evolving into master content synthesizers to meet the needs of consumers and advertisers alike – offering video and photos, local advertising deals, user reviews, QR codes, maps and directions, etc.

Consumer expectations of local search engines have never been higher. Users want to see photo and video reviews of a company’s products, read what other people have to say, and even take a virtual tour of your store or restaurant before they visit.

The same is true of small- and medium-sized business owners looking to find a competitive advantage. Local search engines are offering more dynamic content than ever before to users and it’s up to search marketers to help business owners feed that content.

It’s interesting to see how video content has changed since the advent of YouTube. Instead of traditional video advertising, we’re seeing new technology that lets users look around your business from their own home. Soon, we’ll be able to find virtual creations of almost any environment online – and those virtual tours are being integrated with current deals and other advertising promotions to drive traffic to your business.

Recently, a company called EveryScape partnered with Bing and YP to offer digital advertisers a new local search solution – virtual tours. For example, YP360 will let a user step inside a restaurant in Baltimore while they’re still on the train. They can choose a place and even set a reservation, all within the same application on their phone.

Google Earth has gone indoors and local search engines are responsible for bringing this detailed and vivid content to users while keeping it simple and accessible. And the business case for offering this new content to users and advertisers alike is clear as local advertising is expected to grow to $16.1 billion this year, up from $13.7 billion in 2010.

Even more, mobile phone advertising spending is expected to be more than a billion dollars in 2011, up 48% from 2010. Local search engines like YP and Yelp! are seeing over 20 million visitors a month, many of them accessing via mobile phones.

This is a great opportunity for local search engines and advertisers to embrace this new technology and get ahead of the pack. Effective local advertising goes beyond building a social networking presence and listing in directories – you have to make sure your content is engaging. In the online world, the savviest local search marketers who use this technology well will have the most successful campaigns.

I recommend that any business owner or local search marketer read up on the latest digital advertising solutions and consider offering your customers virtual tours of your products or store. To set your business apart, you need to stay current with the best that local search has to offer.

Apple advertises its products as magical. They’re at the intersection of “technology and the liberal arts,” Steve Jobs said today. Something that moves your heart, not just your lust for technology. Will consumers still buy that in 2011?

The big picture question of the day is whether Apple has done it again. With the original iPad, Apple crushed its rivals, taking more than 90 percent of the tablet market in 2010 and selling more than 15 million units. Jobs predicted today that 2011 will be the year of the iPad 2. Based on what I have seen today, I think he’s mostly, but not entirely, right.

Competitors will discover that Apple has a lot of inherent financial advantages, including being a low-cost leader. That may not sound intuitive, but I believe it has to be true. It is selling so much volume of its products that it can get discounts on parts and manufacturing services that no one else can get.

When it sells its products in stores, it also doesn’t have to give away 20 percent of the margin to a retailer. That is a huge financial advantage. Carriers are also willing to subsidize the costs of Apple products in a way that they won’t with other tablet vendors. All of these things may explain why the Motorola Xoom, a very cool product, is selling for $800 while Apple has priced its new devices at $499 to $829, (and dropped the price of the old iPad to $399). Apple has also left very little room for rivals here, since it has signed up both AT&T and Verizon. Perhaps there is room for rivals to sell $199 machines, but users probably aren’t going to like them.

Those are reasons why any cool Apple mobile product could beat other rivals. But Apple has also done some smart things with the iPad 2. It has created another rev of its microprocessor, the A5, which has two cores, or computing brains. And it has nine times faster graphics than its old A4 chip. Since Apple designs this chip itself, it doesn’t have to give away much margin to a chip design firm. It only has to give a small margin to a chip manufacturer such as Samsung to make the chips.

Apple has also custom-designed the A5 to run Apple applications on a device with a 10-hour battery life. Apple should have an edge there, as it won’t sell the A5 to rivals. But if this is an advantage, it isn’t likely to last long, as Nvidia is being very aggressive with a new quad-core chip that it could sell to any Android rivals.

The design of the iPad 2 is where Apple has more advantages. The iPad 2 will have faster web-browsing with a new version of Safari. It has two cameras that will inspire a lot of video and photo-related apps. The availability of the Mac applications — iMovie, Garage Band, and Photo Booth — on the iPad 2 will make a lot of users happy. More interesting features will come with new releases of the iOS, or Apple’s operating system in the fairly near future.

There are some users who won’t like the restrictions of Apple’s ecosystem. If they want universal serial bus (USB) and SD card ports, they are out of luck. Apple didn’t change the resolution of its screen either, leaving it at 1024 x 768. Competitors could add these options and put emphasis on them as selling points. (Critics are disappointed that Apple did not improve the display, but that’s a big cost issue others have too).

Apple has also made great improvements in the feel of the product. It’s 33 percent thinner, 2 ounces lighter, and it has a wonderful new screen cover that doubles as a stand for the device. (It wakes up the device when you peel it back and it has micro-fibers that clean the screen when the cover is on).

Now here is why Jobs is not entirely right. Apple has come up with a stunning machine at prices that the competitors will have a hard time beating. But it is almost inevitable that Android-based tablets will gain market share on Apple.

So far, I don’t see the Android machine that will beat the iPad 2. But the potential is there, given ingredients such as Android 3.0, Nvidia Tegra 2 chips and other fast microprocessors, and 4G LTE. The latter is the main weakness in Apple’s armor.

LTE is fast, with a minimum speed on Verizon at around 12 megabits a second and actual speeds running much higher than that now. Getting access to 4G LTE is as big a benefit as having access to lots of cool apps, from my point of view. Right now, the timing of the still-young LTE technology means that Apple cannot yet put it into its mass-produced, lowest-cost tablet computers.

If LTE costs come down sometime soon, then Apple can launch a new version of the iPad to incorporate the technology. But it’s not a simple upgrade, as it means that the hardware of the machine — including the radio chip — has to change. And for now, LTE chips are larger than their 3G equivalents, so the heat dissipation and product size are affected. In other words, LTE can force Apple to redesign the iPad.

Apple can do that. But Android tablet makers might be able to move faster than Apple directly into the 4G LTE tablet market. If they do that, then they will have found a scenario where they could steal a march on Apple. Apple is not likely to let that gap last for a long time, but it might be enough for Apple to lose some share this year.

Apple’s leadership position in this market will be hard to beat, but the collective weight and reach of Android rivals could erode it. And here’s a sobering thought: If Apple eventually winds up with only 30 percent of the tablet market, it could still be No. 1, and its place as the largest technology company in the world will not be at risk.

I read an interesting article this morning that suggested Apple would change its mind and put Adobe’s Flash technology on its iOS devices within a year. I don’t think that’s going to happen.

In an open letter to users, Apple CEO Steve Jobs gave several reasons why he didn’t want Flash on the iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. They are: Flash isn’t open; the full web; reliability, security and performance; battery life; and touch.

Adobe began shipping Flash Player 10.1 for Mobile last June, but even Laptop magazine admitted that “Steve Jobs was right,” and that “Adobe’s offering seems like it’s too little, too late.” Granted, that report was from six months ago, but it still doesn’t bode well for the technology.

There is no doubt that Adobe is making advances with Flash on mobile devices, but I don’t believe future changes will be enough to get Apple to adopt the technology.

Jobs has been very clear that Apple supports HTML5, an open technology that is controlled by a standards committee, not one company. By building support for that technology into Webkit, Apple is ensuring that mobile Web browsers will be able to access what we’ve come to know as the “full web.”

Webkit is used by Google, Palm, Nokia and RIM, so it has a pretty solid base.

One of the arguments often bantered about when the discussion of the “full Web” comes up is video. There is no doubt that Flash made huge strides over the years in having sites like YouTube encode their videos in Flash. But that’s for the desktop.

As Jobs points out, almost all of this video is also available in H.264 format (a format Flash also supports), so it’s viewable on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

“Add to this video from Vimeo, Netflix, Facebook, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, ESPN, NPR, Time, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, People, National Geographic, and many, many others. iPhone, iPod and iPad users aren’t missing much video,” wrote Jobs.

You may ask why other companies adopted Flash for their mobile devices when Apple won’t. That’s easy, they are looking for something they have that Apple doesn’t. Considering how hard it is for tablet makers to compete with Apple, any perceived advantage will work.

I’m not an Adobe hater—I know quite a few people that work at Adobe and I think they’ve done some amazing things over the years. Flash for mobile devices isn’t one of them.

Chris Dawson said he gives “Apple a year until they cave [and adopt Flash]. Android tablets will just be too cool and too useful for both entertainment and enterprise applications if they don’t.”

I have been using my iPhone for years and my iPad for one year. I honestly can’t remember the last time I went to a Web site that wouldn’t load because I didn’t have Flash installed. I can load videos from YouTube and a host of other sites too, no problem.

Apple has sold more than 160 million iOS devices and there are no screaming, angry hordes of users breaking down the doors at 1 Infinite Loop demanding Flash on their devices.

In order for Apple to change its mind and adopt Flash, the technology has to be proven to be indispensable and that it will benefit its users. Apple has proven just the opposite is true.

From Small Business TrendsSmall Business News: Social Media Brand

In our second installment of The Business of Blogging, we speak to the uber-talented Tommy Ton, founder of Jak & Jil and streetstyle photographer for Style.com and GQ.com

PARIS, France — “It was the summer of 1997 and I was 13 years old,” recalls Tommy Ton, now 27, describing the moment when a self-professed comic book nerd from the suburbs of Toronto first became interested in fashion. “My sister asked me to record Fashion Television and all of a sudden Tom Ford comes on and talks about women, and his idea of sex. He was so eloquent in his choice of words. It was love at first sight.”

From that moment, Mr. Ton embarked on what has been described as a something of a fairytale, becoming the world’s most influential street style fashion photographer today. But achieving such success is rarely that simple — or easy.

More than just a skilled photographer with a good eye and encyclopedic knowledge of fashion, Ton has proven himself to be a savvy digital operator with a potent mixture of ambition, work ethic and strategic thinking that has enabled him to discover and hone in on his special talent. His humility throughout it all has endeared him not only to the stylish women he has made famous, but also to fellow fashion bloggers and his growing list of paying clients.

Yes, Tommy Ton is building a business, and he’s proud of it.

At first, Mr. Ton says he simply became infatuated with fashion. “I’d bike to the library, tear out ad campaigns, and make collages of Gucci and Versace,” he explains over dinner during Paris Fashion Week. At age 15, he interned with the Toronto designer Wayne Clark and then in the women’s accessories department of Holt Renfrew, Canada’s leading luxury department store.

From the beginning, Ton has been a fervent but charming networker, not afraid to approach and build relationships with the industry’s top players. “I made an effort so Barbara Atkin knew who I was,” he says, referring to the Holt Renfrew’s highly-respected fashion director. This ultimately landed him a gig in the store’s buying office, furthering his understanding of the fashion business, but still not quite sating his fashion appetite.

“I was there in the Summer of 2004 when web magazines first started popping up,” he says. Ton started taking classes in digital photography and met with friends who did graphic design, before deciding to start Jak & Jil, which was initially conceived in 2005 as a lifestyle website focused on the product and people in Toronto.

“Then my guardian angel came along,” says Ton, referring to Lynda Latner, proprietor of vintagecouture.com. “She hired me because she saw my site and thought I could help her.”

In 2007 when Latner offered to send Ton to Europe to attend the shows in London and Paris, he had his first opportunity to experiment with street photography during fashion week, a trend which was just beginning to take off due to the pioneering work of Scott Schuman and Garance Doré.

“My first show in Paris was Balmain. I had no idea what Balmain was at the time, or what it was going to be, but all the girls were in that that show, like Daria, Irina, and Anja, and they played the Cure on the soundtrack. As soon as that show was done, it was raining outside…and I was dancing in the rain. I just felt so uplifted. I could not believe what fashion could do for you,” recalls Ton nostalgically. “To have that moment in Paris, at your very first show…it was magical.”

Using his “Canadian connections,” Ton also managed to get into Chanel, YSL, Dries van Noten and Rick Owens that first season. But in all the excitement, Ton says he didn’t know who or what to shoot. “I just shot what I thought was visually amazing. I didn’t know who Emmanuelle Alt was, or Kate Lanphear or even Anna Dello Russo.”

Almost immediately after this first trip, the Canadian fashion media took note of Ton’s photography, beginning with Flare magazine editor Lisa Tant. “Because of that trip, I got a page in Flare which gave me a validated reason to go back,” he says.

By 2008 Ton was already seeking a way to stand out from the growing hordes of photographers outside the shows who were mostly aping Schuman’s photographic style. “I thought, ‘I’m so tired of taking head-to-toe shots. No one can touch Scott at those photos — he is the king.’ I wanted my photos to stand out. That’s when I stated taking the candid shots.”

Ton’s landscape-style images focused in on the little details that caught his well-trained fashion eye — a towering Louboutin stiletto here, a pop of colour there on his favourite subjects as they walked into the shows. He rarely asked them to pose. Ton was developing a photographic style that that has now become instantly recognisable as his own, capturing the raw energy and excitement of fashion week. Fellow blogger Tavi Gevinson later remarked, “You always know what a Tommy Ton photograph looks like.”

He re-purposed Jak and Jil into a blog, and started posting two or three of his new style of photographs each day. This caught the attention of influential bloggers like Susanna Lau of Style Bubble and Rumi Neely of Fashion Toast, who helped to spread the word.

Two and half months later, Ton received an email from the head of marketing at Lane Crawford in Hong Kong, asking him to shoot their Spring/Summer 2009 campaign.

“I said yes, but I didn’t even know what my worth was,” says Ton. “After talking to my business friends in the industry, I threw a figure at Lane Crawford. It was a bit too much, but we negotiated, and I was proud of myself because I was able to get an amount that I was satisfied with and which they were willing to pay.”

With his reputation spreading, Ton’s confidence began to grow. “During the Fall/Winter 2009 season, people started to know who I was. Scott [Schuman] actually knew my work. I was officially blogging and shooting for Lane Crawford at the same time. That was the season I knew what I was doing, and I knew what I wanted to shoot. It was the beginning of something.”

Another important shift came the following season in Milan, when Ton was seated in Dolce & Gabbana’s front row, alongside DorĂ©, Schuman and Bryanboy, an image that was plastered in the fashion media around the world, signalling the arrival of fashion bloggers. “That was a huge moment. It was all due to Anna Dello Russo. She was the one who told Domenico and Stefano: ‘These are the people who are changing things.’”

From then on, the front row tickets came in fast and furious. Everyone wanted Ton to shoot at their shows, knowing his images would be seen by thousands of fashion enthusiasts and influencers around the world. The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and others came calling. “They were emailing to buy photos,” he says.

Ton went from ultimate fashion outsider to insider almost overnight.

But the real turning point came a few weeks earlier when Style.com’s editor-in-chief Dirk Standen asked Ton to step into the formidable shoes of Scott Schuman, whose own photography career had gone stratospheric, in no small part due to the platform given to him by Style.com. Schuman had decided to leave Style.com to focus on other projects, and Ton now had the most high-profile streetstyle photography gig in the business.

“Being associated with Style.com is a huge deal for me. It’s what everyone looks at every day. People go to Style.com like you brush your teeth in the morning. It’s something you just do,” enthuses Ton.

By now, the time had come for Ton to seek professional representation. An introduction to elite agency The Collective Shift—which also represents top fashion photographers Inez and Vinoodh and super-stylist Melanie Ward—instantly felt like the right fit. Ton also signed on Trunk Archive to act as his image licensing agency, removing the burden of negotiating image rights and contracts on his own and dramatically increasing what he could earn from selling his images to the likes of American Vogue, Elle UK, and Vogue Nippon.

“Before, I was underselling myself, getting about $50-100 per image.” Today, Ton reports that he can earn from as little as $100 up to $2000. “The the thing I’ve learned is that you have to really consider whether it’s a one page image or a ½ page image or ¼ page image. It’s a really big deal when it’s one image over two pages in Grazia for example, whereas if it’s ⅛ of a page in Vogue, it is much less. I’m lucky to have Trunk Archive to deal with all that now.”

But image licensing only makes up about 30 percent of the revenue he earns. The remaining 70 percent comes from a variety of projects, including his gigs for Style.com, GQ.com, but also for retailers and brands such as Topshop, Selfridges, Sergio Rossi and Saks 5th Avenue.

Ton says he has made an intentional decision not to have advertising on his site. “It’s an association with your brand. I didn’t want my blog to be associated with any type of branding,” he explains.

But would he ever take pay for editorial placement on Jak & Jil itself? “Yes,” he says matter-of-factly. “But that requires a discussion between my agent, my client and me. The thing about the development of the Tommy Ton brand and the Jak & Jil brand is that everything is strategically selected and carefully monitored. We have to see potential growth in it, and understand what’s in it for us.”

When pressed on the criteria he uses for this kind of paid content, so as not to alienate his audience, he pauses to think. “It’s definitely gut instinct. It just has to be of the moment and relevant for the time.” His readers shouldn’t be able to tell the difference, he says, because the images he creates would be the kind he would post anyway. The standards are the same, and the images are just as powerful.

All the same, Tommy Ton also realizes this is his moment and it may not last forever. “I don’t even know if I will be able to earn the money I do now in a few years. I don’t know if I will be relevant or not. I am just lucky that people want to associate with me and their brand right now.”

And what about all that competition from the hundreds of streetstyle bloggers outside the shows? “You always have to stay on top of your game, and the only way to do that now is to have exclusive content,” he asserts. Recently, Ton has been invited to shoot behind-the-scenes at the Proenza Schouler studio and the Victoria’s Secret fashion show.

“I’m not making any money from it, but it gives me access no one else would have. I take a lot of pride in that. I am so, so happy I am invited to do these things,” he says, recalling that 13 year old kid watching Tom Ford on TV back in Toronto. “In some ways I still feel like an outsider, even though I am acknowledged by these designers. I am still in awe of what is going on.”
